This was a fun experience. It was still very cold, no prominent hatches.
There is a sunken log (see the map) and there was a beaver sitting or swimming
around. But my fish finder insisted that there is some activity going on in the
top water. So, I anchored and decided to give it a try.
I've tried different techniques and even different fly lines without much success.
Fish was mostly certain was present there, so no reason to cruise further.
Finally, having a sinking line (type 3) for no particular reason I attached Tom
Thumb with short hackle and red belly. Made a cast. Line started to sink,
while fly remained on the surface. Soon, the line was deep and dragged
the fly under the surface film. Things just didn't seem to work this morning...
and the very next moment - BANG! Here comes the first one.
Next cast - same process - BANG! Another one. Fly was totally destroyed,
so I changed it to water boatman pattern and action was non stop for the
next two hours until I was completely frozen.
At that time I was unfamiliar with fishing water boatmen. By incident I picked
the right technique – FS line type III and a floating/dry fly. Fish always take
water boatman on the way from the surface to the bottom. So, that is how you
imitate the bug!
Interesting, but beavers didn't seem to bother fish at all.
