Topic: Targeted advertising? |

Why are advertisers willing to pay for so-called "targeted advertising?" When I turn off my ad blockers most of the ads I see are not of interest to me, and in many cases they are irrelevant. For example, I just went to a news site I frequent and the banner across the top of the page was for Jimmy Johns restaurants--there isn't one within hours of here and I don't recall ever seeing one. On another site I see more than one ad for Ram trucks. Again, I am not in the market for a Ram truck, I have never owned a truck, and if for some reason I needed one I would never buy a Chrysler product. On most sites I also see tons of garbage--clickbait sponsored posts that I would never click on in a million years!
And this system is what makes the Internet work?

Advertisers invest in targeted advertising because, in theory, it allows them to reach potential customers who might be interested in their products or services. However, I totally get your frustration with irrelevant ads – it's a common issue. Sometimes, the ad targeting algorithms don't quite hit the mark, leading to ads that seem out of place.
For the internet, advertising is a major revenue source that supports many online services and content creators. It's the trade-off that enables free access to a vast amount of content. While the system isn't perfect, you can use ad blockers to reduce irrelevant ads and support websites through alternative means like subscriptions or direct contributions to creators. It's all about finding the right balance between user experience and sustaining the internet ecosystem.

In my experience as a small online business owner, I faced similar challenges with advertising. Advertisers must fine-tune their strategies to avoid wasting resources on irrelevant audiences. This is where tools like the AdSpy tool come in handy. They allow advertisers to refine their campaigns, ensuring ads reach the right people.
The internet's ad-driven revenue model does have its flaws, but it also helps sustain many online services. As users, we can use ad blockers to minimize irrelevant ads and support platforms in alternative ways, such as subscribing to premium services or donating to content creators.
